Stories about the cranberry

According to the stories, the cranberry entered the Netherlands via Terschelling. In the 19th century, the residents of Terschellling discovered the cranberry bushes in the dune valleys. Later it turned out that this plant was descended from the North of America. There are various stories about how the berries ended up in the dunes of Terschelling. We have (in our opinion) looked up the best story for you and that goes as follows:

Cranberries were traded extensively in the 18th and 19th centuries from Canada and America to Europe. The story goes that barrels of cranberries were thrown overboard and stranded on Terschelling during a crossing. A few beachcombers thought that the barrels were full of red wine. Unfortunately for them, it only turned out to be "red berries." Out of frustration, she threw these barrels into the dunes. Some time later, the dunes of Terschelling were littered with cranberry bushes. Since then, cranberries on Terschelling have been picked and eaten in large numbers.

Thanksgiving and the cranberry

What do thanksgiving and cranberries have to do with each other? When the first pilgrims from Europe discovered the "unknown" country of America, they learned from the local population how to eat the strange plants and animals of the country. As a thank you for this, they invited them to a thanksgiving party to celebrate the harvest, which is now called "thanksgiving." During this party, turkey with cranberry sauce was always served and that is still the tradition today.

Cranberries are tasty and healthy

The cranberry has a nice taste. The taste is slightly more acidic when compared to, for example, raisins and naturally contains many healthy vitamins and minerals, such as vitamins C, E, B5, K, iron and manganese.
